Kean University softball squeaked into the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs Saturday afternoon as the team split a double header with Ramapo. Kean took game one 8-0 and lost to Ramapo 2-1 in the second game.

In the first game, run support for Courtney Yard came in the middle innings when Sandra Binkiewicz got things going with a sacrifice fly that brought Meghan Cegielski to second, Kelly Moorehead drove in Cegielski with two outs in the third inning. In the latter part of the game, the Cougars opened up the flood gates with a Courtney Melchionna three-run triple.

Yard earned her ninth shutout of the season and struck out 11 batters becoming Kean’s all-time leader in strikeouts with 330 breaking Janice Limchak’s record of 320 set in 1989.

However, there was no time for celebrating just yet because Yard still had a second game to pitch. Yard struck out nine more batters in the second game but allowed a bottom of the seventh run to score to lose the game 2-1. Yard is now 15-11 on the season.

Tuesday, the Cougars will hit the road to face the top seed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament Rowan. Kean is 0-2 against Rowan this season losing a double header against them March 29 9-2 and 4-2. There is no doubt Yard will start that game and pitcher her heart out.
