St. Louis Cardinals Draft Kevin Herget

In the 39th round of the 2013 MLB Draft, the St. Louis Cardinals selected New Jersey Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year and Kean University pitcher Kevin Herget. Herget becomes the sixth Cougars player to get drafted by a major-league team. This puts the cherry on top of a fantastic season.

Although the Cougars lost in straight games in the College World Series in Wisconsin, Herget was named an American Baseball Coaches Association All-American as well as D3Baseball.com All-American. This season for the Cougars, Herget had an outstanding 10-2 record with a 1.62 ERA and 106 strikeouts. Herget never lost a Jim Hynes ’63 Stadium.

The Park Ridge, N.J. native will surely be missed in the Cougars rotation next season. Herget finishes his career as the career leader in strikeouts.

“When I heard Kevin was drafted, I was in the mall with my wife and I started shaking and crying with tears of joy,” said Kean coach Neil Ioviero. “It was not because we had someone drafted; we have had players drafted/signed throughout the years. It was because instantly I started remembering how long and hard he has worked for this. His level of commitment and passion for the game is unmatched. He can hold his own with anyone because he has the stuff to get people out. I texted him to make sure you thank your parents and most of all thank God.”
