On September 13, 2013, The Kean Wellness Center was first opened. Today, it provides holistic health and wellness services to the entire Kean Union campus. The Kean Wellness Center, located in Downs Hall, is easily accessible and offers many different student friendly services such as Holistic Health Services, Crisis Counseling, Mental Health and Wellness, and accessibility services.

Since its inception in 2013, the Wellness Center has expanded low-cost diagnostic screenings through UWill and developed more comprehensive wellness programs to help promote mental, physical, and social health for students. An appointment isn’t even necessary, all students need to do is walk into Downs Hall and the Wellness Center’s supportive staff members ready to help with any issues one may have. The Kean Wellness Center has become a place where students can feel safe going to when dealing with mental issues, physical issues, food insecurities, housing difficulties, school issues, or any other issues they may be dealing with.

The services at the Wellness Center are free of charge, accessible, and accommodating to the needs of Kean’s students. Even for students who don’t have any physical, mental or psychological needs, the Wellness Center is a place to stop by for school or career advice. Kean student Isiah Daniels shared that the Wellness Center is convenient for him because he doesn’t have to go to his doctor in Livingston to get a test for sickle cells.

Besides the services offered to help improve students’ mental and physical health, the Wellness Center also offers free and accessible food pantry to make it easier for students who are dealing with food difficulties. To ensure students are being supported or being helped with mental or physical health issues, the Kean Wellness Center has been weekly doing table events These events are among the main ways the Wellness Center is trying to increase their outreach and encourage students in the Kean community to come visit them.

“(We) made a distinct effort to do a little more outreach in the classrooms to learn from the students, (having) a conversation (with) and learning from those students is the main goal,” Wellness Center counselor John Grady said on the Wellness Center’s efforts to reach students.

The Wellness Center taking initiative to improve their already strong program and increase outreach among the Kean community is a win for everybody. They offer many programs, like UWill, the already mentioned food pantry, mental health programs, and more to ensure the physical and mental wellness of students and staff members. With a hardworking and united staff that genuinely cares about the students, the Kean Wellness Center is a place every student should visit.
