An Interview with Keanu the Cougar
By Jalen Gaynor
Now going by Keanu, Kean’s cougar gave a behind the scenes look into what it takes to be a great mascot.
In January, the cougar announced the university would be holding a poll to determine what their new name would be. All students, faculty, staff, and alumni were given an opportunity to take part.
Submissions closed on Jan. 31, as all suggestions from the Kean community were considered. On April 7, Kean released a youtube video filmed with the cougar, several students, and President Lamont Repollet revealing the mascot’s new name would be Keanu.
Keanu recently took some time to discuss their new name as well as what it’s like to have the role of such a beloved mascot.
JG: What do you think of your new name?
Keanu: My new name reflects the cougar I was destined to become. I am now officially the hottest Keanu in the country! It is an all-encompassing name; K – Kind, E – Energetic, A – Adventurous, N – Nice, U – Universally Loved
JG: What is your favorite part about being our mascot?
Keanu: I love the cheers and excitement from my Kean Community when I make appearances.
JG: What is the most challenging part about being our mascot?
Keanu: With great power comes great responsibility. I always have to remember that I am representing all cougars. It is an honor to serve my community and bring joy and Kean spirit wherever I go.
JG: Do you have any fun stories about being the mascot?
Keanu: The looks on the faces of little children when they see me are always special. I am usually interacting with college or high school students, but when there is a small child at an event, I get to show a different side of me – a little more nurturing and always fun.
JG: What do you do if you are ever having an off day?
Keanu: I tap into my Kean spirit. It always lifts me up.
JG: Is there anyone that can replace you if you can’t be somewhere?Keanu: There never needs to be, because I am always here for my Kean community!
