Entering the double header against Rowan Saturday afternoon, the Kean University baseball team had one thing on its mind and that was to win at least one game to become in the top seed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament. Luckily, the Cougars were able to split the double header and clinch the regular season NJAC championship and the top seed in the tournament.
The Cougars won the first game 4-3 after second baseman Tyler Smarslok lined a triple setting up an RBI ground out from Andy Lopez to even the game. In the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Reitmeyer doubled, which brought up Shane Alvarez to the plate. Alvarez singled pushing Reitmeyer across the plate to win the game for the Cougars.
After going back and forth in the second game, Rowan edged out Kean 7-4 with a two-run performance in the top of the ninth from the Profs to seal the deal. Andrew Torres picked up the loss in 3 2/3 innings. Profs’ Nick Kreiger, Kevin McMenamin and C.J. Szymczak all had doubles for the Profs in the second game.
Kean’s win marks the 30th of the season as the Cougars move to 30-8. It is the teams ninth straight season with 30 wins.
The Cougars are hosting The College of New Jersey Tuesday in the first round of the NJAC tournament.
