The No. 3 Kean University baseball team defeated William Paterson Thursday afternoon 9-4 moving to the top of the New Jersey Athletic Conference behind a dominate performance from Charles Thielmann.

Thielmann went the distance allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out six batters for his sixth win of the season. He got a lot of help from the Cougars offense and never had to really sweat on the mound.

In the top of the third, down 1-0, Joe O’Connor singled to score Tyler Smarslok. Then, as O’Connor tried to steal second, Nick Ramagli went for home and scored giving Kean the lead. In the fifth, Smarslok, Ramagli and O’Connor scored when Salvatore Taormina singled off of William Patterson pitcher Tim O’Shea.

Ramagli finished 4-for-4 with a home run, four runs and two RBI. Ramagli has two home runs on the season.

The Cougars tacked on four more runs including three in the ninth to seal the deal and to move to 25-6 on the season.

The two teams play Friday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium.
