UNION, N.J. — On Jan. 24, upwards of 200 guests attended the Chapin Family concert at Kean University’s Wilkins Theatre, donating non-perishable food, cleaning and health products, and monetary donations for students in need.

The acts of kindness from fans of the Chapin family gave immense support to the Cougar Pantry, one of Kean University’s most successful projects.

Cougar Pantry is located at Down’s Hall on Kean’s Union Campus and has grown significantly since its establishment in 2019. It prides itself on providing students in need with various food options, hygiene and health products, while inspiring the community to give back.

“They [The Chapin Family] didn’t want to host a concert without including a piece of service,” said Carla Vitola, the pantry’s Community Care Coordinator. “We got about two bins full of…food and also monetary donations through the foundation.”

While on stage, the Chapin family encouraged fans to donate throughout the event. Fans donated goods and funds to Cougar Pantry using a QR code and an in-person drop box. By the end of the night, the donation boxes had overflowed with the generosity of the attendees.

The Chapin family is well known for their music and support in the fight against hunger. Two generations of the Chapin family honored Harry Chapin that night through celebration, music, community, and connection.

Chapin was a philanthropist and political songwriter who supported communities and organizations that fought against hunger. He and his family are well known for their advocacy in both music and non-profit organizations.

With the help of the donations and The Community FoodBank of New Jersey, the Kean Wellness Center is now able to provide a larger variety of food and hygiene products.

Jala Bacon, a junior at Kean, has utilized the Pantry for two years. “The pantry is a great touch point for students at the university. . .if more people knew how willing others were to donating resources to the community here, others would feel more inclined to utilize those resources,” said Bacon.

Students can register to access the pantry by setting an appointment with Ms. Vitola, who will assess their needs and the best course of action.

“Use your resources, and not just the resources I have here, but Health Services, Career Services…”  said Vitola. “There are so many resources for you as students here on campus. So use them and ask for help.”
