Students of the honor society

On Tuesday afternoon, 38 students from the School of Communication, Media, and Journalism were inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the honor society of the National Communication Association.
The ceremony began with an introduction to a jam-packed auditorium from Professor Larry Tung, MFA, the faculty advisor for the Kean chapter of Lambda Pi Eta.
Dr. Fred Fitch followed with a speech, congratulating all of the inductees.
“You’re here because you are thinkers,” said Fitch. “The study of communication makes and creates reality. That’s what you’re all doing.”
Three students, Jillian Perera, Bhriana Smith, and Cori Saunders were recognized for having the three highest grade point averages of all the inductees. One by one, each student was recognized, and given their certificates, pins, and honor cords.
Linda Hanford, public relations major, was very proud of the work she’s done in order to become a member.
“When I first started college, it was my goal to graduate with honors,” said Hanford. “I kept remembering that I didn’t graduate with any honors in high school, and that really motivated me to fully commit myself to college. There are no real words to describe excited I feel about this.”
Lambda Pi Eta was founded in 1985. It represents what Aristotle described in The Rhetoric as the three ingredients for persuasion. Logos (Lambda), meaning logic; Pathos (Pi), meaning emotion; and Ethos (Eta), relating to your character and credibility.
In order to become a member of Lambda Pi Eta, one must meet the following criteria: You must complete 60 semester credit-hours, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for all courses taken, complete the equivalent of 12 semester credit-hours in communication studies, have a minimum GPA of 3.25 for all communication studies courses, be currently enrolled as a student in good standing, and Rank within the highest thirty-five percent of one’s class in general scholarship.
