Kean University softball split the day against Richard Stockton first losing to the Ospreys 1-0 and then defeating them 3-0. However, the main story of the game was Courtney Yard who set a record on the day.

In game one, Yard struck out 15 batters but allowed a home run to Arielle Cooke in the top of the fifth inning to drop the game. Yard’s 15 strikeouts, however, is a new record for the softball team. Yard held the old record that she set this season as she struck out 12 batters in a single game.

In game two, she struck out eight more batters en route to a no-hitter and a victory. Yard also contributed an RBI along with Kelly Moorehead to solidify the Cougars’ 23rd win of the season and ninth win in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. She also got some help from Courtney Melchionna who made a nice diving play at third base to keep the no-no intact.

Yard is now one strikeout away from tying the school’s strikeout record.

Kean ends the season Saturday on the road against Ramapo in a double header match-up. A win in either game guarantees a spot in the conference championship for the Cougars.
