Vinny Zanfordino continues his dominance as the Cougars’ Relief pitcher

By Jaime Alicea III

The Kean University baseball team took on Desales University in a wild game that saw many defensive saves from both teams.

The Cougars struggled to get things going as Desales began the first 3 innings with not one, but three stolen bases. Senior Pitcher Mike Daley got himself into a couple of difficult situations, but still managed to maintain his composure and throw strikes when it mattered most, leaving Desales’ runners stranded at 3rd base three consecutive times.

At Top of the 3rd inning, the Cougars were the first to put up points in a wacky fashion as a series of bunts led to the Desales pitcher getting flustered and throwing a wild ball over their 1st baseman’s head, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

Desales soon answered back, scoring in the bottom of the 3rd inning, the score 2-1 with bases loaded as Kean brought out senior Richie Ferguson. Ferguson came in and prevailed with two clutch strikeouts, bases loaded.

Bottom of the 7th saw Desales making strides for a possible comeback victory, but with #42 Vinny Zanfordino on the mound, no one stood a chance as the last batter went out swinging, with only air to preserve the Cougars’ 5-2 victory.

“I don’t pay attention to how many people I strike out, I just want wins whether my ERA is a 7 or a 1,” said Zanfordino. “I just go out there to win.”
