Elizabeth, located in Union County, is one of the largest cities in New Jersey. With a population of 140,413 and a growing number of people arriving each year, Elizabeth is one of the most populated cities in the state. It is also home to a large migrant community, made up of individuals who left their countries in search of opportunities and found refuge in Elizabeth. Being surrounded by so many people with similar experiences allows many of them to feel a sense of home.

Despite this, Elizabeth often goes unnoticed by tourists and people from different parts of New Jersey, being seen mainly as a city people pass through. This is largely influenced by its location on the border of New York City, which causes a city like Elizabeth to be overshadowed by its proximity to what is often considered the capital of the world by many people.

Elizabeth is home to a wide range of attractions unknown to travelers. One of its most prominent destinations is The Mills at Jersey Gardens, one of the most popular outlet malls in New Jersey and a frequent highlight on social media and digital travel platforms. The mall attracts both tourists and residents, offering a unique shopping experience that combines affordability and variety. With approximately 230 outlet stores and restaurants, The Mills at Jersey Gardens serves as a major commercial hub and a key tourist attraction that brings constant activity and visibility to the city.

Elizabeth also offers a wide variety of parks throughout the city, many of which often go unnoticed, despite being located just minutes away from major highways and transit routes. One of the most notable is Warinanco Park, which ranks among the largest parks in Union County. It is a spacious area where families gather to enjoy quality time together during both the winter and summer seasons. More than just a park with green spaces and playgrounds for children, Warinanco Park also provides access to a skating center and, during the summer, offers boat rentals on its lake.

While parks such as Warinanco offer large green spaces and recreational areas, there are also places that carry deeper meaning and are often used for community events. One of these is Veterans Memorial Waterfront Park, located along the Elizabeth Waterfront. Unlike other parks, this space offers a calmer and more peaceful atmosphere, where families can walk along the pier. From certain points, visitors can even catch a distant view of New York City’s skyline. The park is especially appealing because of its waterfront location and its events during holidays such as the Fourth of July.

While many outsiders view Elizabeth as a transit city, as mentioned earlier, it is also home to a large number of immigrant families, which has transformed the city into a culturally rich space, filled with a wide variety of restaurants and businesses representing many different nationalities. The cultural diversity adds a strong appeal to the city, making it an excellent option for tourists or visitors looking to try new foods or experience different traditions. Places such as Noches de Colombia and Rancho Mateo are regularly visited by people from all over the world, not only by Colombians, as one might assume.

One area that holds strong cultural representation in Elizabeth is Morris Avenue, where the majority of Colombian restaurants, bakeries and small businesses are located. This avenue is officially recognized as the Colombian district and is frequently visited by people who are not necessarily residents of Elizabeth. Morris Avenue serves as a lively and culturally rich space that Colombians have gradually woven into the fabric of the city over the years. The street stands as a powerful representation of Colombian heritage and of the deep significance it holds for migrants from that country.

The large immigrant population and the atmosphere shaped by the city’s strong Hispanic presence often make visitors feel at home.

“I feel at home when I’m in Elizabeth, I find all the food and energy that I had back home,” said Manuela Rodriguez, an Ecuadorian immigrant now living in North Bergen, New Jersey.

Lina Lopez, Columbian immigrant, shared similar experiences. “I don’t miss home that much living here in Elizabeth. I have almost everything that I could (possibly) miss here.”

As Elizabeth continues to be crossed by thousands of people every day, it remains widely known only as a place to pass through rather than a destination to explore. Many see Elizabeth as a transit city with little beyond that. However, those whose choose to stop, observe, and appreciate it may be pleasantly surprised, especially members of the Hispanic community who miss their traditions. Elizabeth rarely appears in tourist guides or lists of recommended destinations, yet there is much more to discover about the city and the many experiences it has to offer.
