As Governor, Mikie Sherrill began her second week calling for the immediate impeachment of U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following two fatal shootings in Minneapolis, MN by federal immigration agents. Sherrill said that agents are acting outside the scope of their duties and described the situation as dangerous. Noem’s department claims that one of the victims was a domestic terrorist, but video from various angles contradict that narrative. Sherrill stated, “There needs to be a stand-down from duty…It’s dangerous, and it should not be acceptable to anyone-Democrat, Republican alike, should all be calling for this to end immediately.”

Governor Sherrill made a guest appearance on The Daily Show (Comedy Central) on Wednesday, January 28th. She spoke to host Desi Lydic and said, “We are…going to be standing up a portal so people can upload all their cell phone videos and alert people…if you see an ICE agent…get your phone out.” With that, the crowd cheered. Sherrill demands that documentation be shown by ICE agents because right now they will not tell us who they are. The proposal for the portal would focus on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Supporters see it as a new state-run accountability tracker. Critics, like Assembly Republican Leader John DiMaio (R-Warren) said, “New Jersey has been moving in the wrong direction…making it harder for law enforcement to do their jobs.”

During her appearance on the Daily Show, Sherrill was asked about the Gateway Tunnel project. This project aims to build new rail tunnels under the Hudson River and repair existing tunnels. Federal funds were allocated for this project. However, President Trump froze these funds. Sherrill plans to unfreeze the funds. Her call to President Donald Trump has gone unanswered. Mikie Sherril’s advice to the Democratic Party for the upcoming midterms is, “Listen. That’s where you start every good campaign. Listening to as many voters as possible and I think over time…you gotta talk to everybody.”
