Governor Mikie Sherrill’s seventh week in office was spent preparing a state budget address while managing the political expectations that come with it. She focused mainly on the state’s impending budget challenges ahead of her first budget address. At the statehouse press conference on February 26, Sherrill and Aaron Binder, the State Treasurer, warned that New Jersey faces a structural deficit of around $3 billion. Her administration intends to prioritize spending cuts over tax increases as well as emphasizing goals such as lowering costs for working families, protecting children, and increasing transparency in state government.

Energy

Energy policy was an important part of Governor Sherrill’s week. She voiced her support for actions from the state Board of Public Utilities. Expanding battery storage capacity, strengthening the electric grid, and growing solar power projects are part of a long-term strategy to stabilize energy prices and at the same time, transitioning toward cleaner power sources.

The governor made a public appearance in Phillipsburg for the ribbon-cutting of a community solar project. She was joined by Michele Siekerka , President and CEO of NJBIA (New Jersey Business and Industry Association) as well as labor, business and environmental leaders. The ceremony was for a state-run community solar project that allows residential customers who subscribe to save up to 25% on their electric bills.

An Endorsement

This week also included an endorsement of Joe DiVincenzo Jr for reelection for County Executive of Essex County. DiVincenzo Jr has been in office since 2003. A County Executive functions somewhat like a county-level mayor; the job includes managing county government departments, preparing and proposing the county budget, hiring agency heads, and working with the county commissioners on policy and spending.

New Jersey residents will be closely watching on Tuesday, March 10, to hear Governor Sherrill’s state budget address at the statehouse in Trenton. For coverage of this address and more news about Governor Sherrill, check back every Tuesday afternoon.
