As Kean embodies the Halloween theme this year, multiple student-run organizations on campus will be hosting Halloween themed festivals, with most events scheduled during the last week of October.

On October 26, Kean’s club CHIdesigns will be hosting a UX (user experience) Halloween Kahoot session from 3:45pm-5:00pm, where students will get together to examine their knowledge of user experience, design, accessibility, and human-computer interaction (HCI) in a fun and festive manner.
Kiana Becca Nunez, founder and president of CHIdesigns highlighted the importance of creating an event that makes learning engaging.
“Since Halloween is a time when people get creative, I thought it would be a great opportunity to introduce students to user experience (UX) in a more interactive way,” Nunez said. “UX is all about understanding people and designing experiences around their needs, and I wanted to reflect that through a lighthearted Halloween-themed activity where students could learn while enjoying themselves.”
Students of all majors are welcome to participate in the UX Halloween Kahoot session without knowledge of UX or digital technology, as Nunez said it will be a beginner-friendly and interactive friendly competition session while incorporating the Halloween theme.
Nunez wishes for students to take away is understanding the importance of UX and the influence digital experience the community interacts with every day.
“It’s about understanding people, solving problems, and creating experiences that are accessible,” Nunez said. “From this experience, I hope students feel more comfortable exploring UX, connecting with others, and participating in future CHIdesigns events.”

Ya Ma, CHIdesigns’s advisor, said she is looking forward to students learning human-centered design principles and productivity through the event.
“Kahoot is a great way to make learning more interactive, and adding a Halloween theme makes it even more fun,” Ma said. “I’m also looking forward to seeing how much our students know about UX and HCI.”
Ma has seen other student-run organizations embracing the spooky season and organizing Halloween themed activities for students in creative and fun ways for the campus community.
“I love that they are finding ways to bring their academic interests into something like a Halloween celebration,” Ma said. “It’s also a nice opportunity for students to take a break from their busy schedules, meet new people, and enjoy being part of the Kean community.”
Andrew Khalis, a senior Computer Science major from Westfield and member of the Dungeons and Dragons (DND) Club, highlights an upcoming Halloween Party being held by the club on October 30, 3-6pm.
“Everyone is encouraged to come dressed up and we have some snacks,” Khalis said. “We play Jackbox, Jeopardy; it’s an overall good time.”
The event will also help newcomers learn more about the DND club while celebrating the holidays through informative games. For example, Jeopardy will consist of DND categories.
Khalis is going to dress up as a pirate for both the DND Halloween Party and Halloween, while also going out on Halloween with his significant other. He shared his appreciation for the creativity and community built by other student-run organizations embodying the Halloween theme through bake sales, upcoming interactive activities, and movie nights.
“From what I’ve seen from other clubs, I do see a lot of Halloween representations from flyers and on Cougar’s Link,” Khalis said. “I can see that Kean embodies the spirit of Halloween and has events related to its theme; it’s festive.”

Many student-run organizations are having bake sales this month. One of them was Kean’s Accounting and Finance Association (KAFA), who was providing fall treats, including brownies, soft pretzels, red velvet cakes, chocolate covered, and Tres Leches on October 19 at the Hutchinson Hall Lobby.
Brianna Ramirez, a Senior Finance major and the president of KAFA, shared her gratitude for expressing the festivities with the bake sale along with other staffs, giving students a way to re-live a nostalgic tradition of Halloween.
“As you get older, [trick or treating is] really not something you do much; you’re still dressed up and you [go] to parties but you don’t really trick or treat anymore,” Ramirez said. “The bake sale kind of bringing that essence back into it a little bit; more so what it is for us doing it for Halloween.”
Ramirez shared that KAFA will be having a Halloween bake sale on October 29 at Hutchinson Lobby from 2pm-4pm with freshly-baked complimentary Halloween treats. On their spooky menu will be: Bloody Velvet Cupcakes, Spiderweb Swirl Buns, Graveyard Dirt Brownies, Monster Munch Cookie, Spirit-Soaked Tres Leches, and Ghostly Pretzel Bones.
For more upcoming Halloween themed events, the Global Business Association (GBA) will be having a Halloween movie night on Wednesday, October 28 from 6pm-8pm, providing “spooky-themed snacks” in a welcoming space. If you are looking to attend Halloween events, be sure to check CougarLink for further information and to check if they are RSVP-required.
