Kean Blue Thinks Pink

After many generous donations through the American Cancer Society fundraiser, Kean University has raised $5,771 dollars to help find a cure for breast cancer. October is historically Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout the month, hundreds of supporters participated in raising awareness to find a cure to conquer this disease that affects women and men every year.
Kean University students participated in several fundraisers to raise money for the cause such as organizing bake sales or selling t-shirts in the Miron Student Center.
On October 25th, Kean students were given the opportunity to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Edison, New Jersey. About 130 of Kean’s own gathered together along with 200-400 volunteers to walk a grand total of 4.5 miles to support the cause.
Several volunteers walked in honor of their loved ones who have suffered or passed away from breast cancer.
“My grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer and I went to walk to raise awareness for her and anybody else who was affected by this dreadful disease,” said Michelle Ripa, a Kean University freshman majoring in Speech pathology.
While the majority of the participants walked in memory of their loved ones, others came for different reasons.
On her decision to join the fight in finding a cure for breast cancer, freshman information technology major Alisa Nulman said, “I walked because it’s important to join together and bring awareness to a cause that affects millions and I’m proud I can help.”
According to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer website, since 1993, people began to participate in activities and donate money to raise funds and to find a cure for breast cancer through the organization. A grand total of 11 million supporters have raised $685 million dollars, as stated by the aforementioned Making Strides Against Breast Cancer website. All of the proceeds will go to fund breast cancer research and technology that will help treat breast cancer at an early stage.
