The phones were ringing in Kean University’s athletic department after the NJAC announced earlier this month that parents would be allowed to attend games as spectators., but family and friends were hoping to attend as well.

“At this time, only the parents of the home team players are being allowed for Kean games,” Kim DeRitter, Director of Athletic Communications said.

With sports returning at the university, some families worried about fans in the stands spreading Covid during games.

The university had been following the NJAC guidelines and spectators were not permitted.  Some parents were upset with this decision.

Even though we are in the middle of a pandemic, the parents said they just want to be able to see their children play, especially parents of seniors.

The football season started on March 13, but parents still have anxiety.  Before receiving this news, players and families did not know what was going to take place with the season approaching.

“While I’m happy the season is about to begin, I feel cheated,” Toscha Adams, the mother of quarterback Tyrae Taylor said.

Adams said that she will be able to attend two home games this football season, but the NJAC is not allowing parents to attend as spectators at away games.

“This is my son’s senior year and I would love to be able to attend the away games as well “ said Adams.

When attending the games, all spectators have to wear masks and stand six feet from each other in accordance with social distancing standards.
