Officials confirmed that a Kean University student died Wednesday after sustaining injuries in a car crash in Caldwell, N.J. earlier this week, NJ Advance Media reported.
Devon Smith, 22, of Newark, N.J., was the driver of the 2015 Ford Mustang that crashed into a telephone pole and tree, authorities told NJAM.
The fatal crash on Mountain Avenue near Hatfield Street also claimed the life of 23-year-old Theo Walsh, who was the front passenger in the car, and critically injured a backseat passenger who has yet to be named, NJAM reported.
Kean University issued a statement today in memoriam of Smith which was e-mailed to all students, faculty and staff.
“The University community extends its condolences and deepest sympathy to the Smith family, who are in the process of arranging services.”
Smith – who the university officials say was a junior finance major – was taken to University Hospital in Newark, N.J., before succumbing to his injuries, Essex County Prosecutor Office spokeswoman Katherine Carter told NJAM.
The cause of the crash is still unclear, NJAM reported.
The university encourages students who are in need of counseling to go to the Kean Counseling Center, located in Downs Hall room 127. Employees may seek assistance via the Employee Assistance Program by calling (908) 497-3954.
