Kean Students excited for “fight of the century”

In sports, there are moments that live on forever. Whether it is a buzzer beater in basketball, a walk-off homerun in a game seven, or a touchdown in the last seconds of a game, these moments are must see occurrences that will live on forever.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will take the ring on May 2 in the MGM Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas and will finally deliver the most hyped fight in boxing history. The world will be watching and Kean students are among the millions who hope this boxing match will be a sporting event they will be able to talk about with their kids in the future.

“I am seriously so pumped, this is the fight we all want to see,” said junior MigeulAngelo Lopez. “We can possibly see history that night if Mayweather goes down, and I wouldn’t miss that if you paid me.”

Mayweather is a flawless 47-0, and whether he loses or not, history will be made, as it is projected to be the most watched fight in boxing history. Pay-per-view (PPV) prices are listed at a whopping price of $89.95 according to ESPN.com, but that will not stop our students from seeing the fight. It’s a hefty price to watch a fight, especially for a college student, but the magnitude of this fight allows for skyrocketed prices.

“I’d pay 200 dollars,” said junior Julio Hernandez. “ I’m a huge boxing fan and have been a boxing fan since I was a kid. The sport needed this fight to happen.”

Mayweather, the sports biggest superstar, believes himself to be the best of all time at his craft, and he is not afraid to share that sentiment.

“No one can ever brainwash me to make me believe that Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammed Ali was better than me.” he said confidently in a one-on-one interview with ESPN’s Stephan A. Smith.

The confident demeanor he always portrays is what people either love or hate drastically.

“I hope he gets knocked out in the first round and he shuts up once and for all,” said junior Catilin Kondroski. “ I know nothing about the sport at all but I will be watching just because I know there’s a chance this bigmouth may lose.” she said angrily.

Mayweather has never been knocked out, but if there is someone to do it may be Pacquiao, the scrappy fighter from the Philippines.

Unlike Mayweather, Pacquiao has been defeated and knocked out in the past. His aggressive and resilient style of fighting allows him to play the role of an underdog almost every time he steps in the ring and for some, that makes it easy to root for him.

“I hope Pacquio wins so badly, I’m not a huge fan of boxing but I know I don’t like Mayweather’s personality,” said sophomore Michael Marino. “Everyone’s been talking about this fight for years hopefully it lives up to the hype.”

If Mayweather loses you can tell  your kids you saw a live David versus Goliath, and if he doesn’t you can at least say you witnessed perhaps the greatest boxer ever.
