The NBA season is officially upon us once again. Teams are finishing off their final pre-season games as they will attempt to be the team who holds up the Larry O’Brien trophy.

As the season officially tips off Tuesday, October 19th, students and fans at Kean University have begun predicting who will win the championship this upcoming season.

“This season I think the Nets are going to win it,” Michael Garlatti, a junior at Kean, shares his prediction.

Garlatti, who is majoring in communication media and film, believes Brooklyn’s two superstars Kevin Durant and James Harden gives them a good chance.

“Right now, Harden and Durant, they want that championship, and they have a good chance of winning,” Garlatti said.

According to the NBA’s official website, the Nets are tied with the highest chance of winning the championship this year, given a 25% chance of winning. They are currently tied with the Los Angeles Lakers with the best chances.

The Lakers are one of the favorites and a team many fans have predicted as winning the championship this season. Student Carlos Martinez is one of those people who sees the Lakers winning it all.

“I got the Lakers as my overall favorites to win it all,” Martinez said.

Martinez, a senior majoring in environmental science, also sees the current reigning champions as his favorites.

“My two favorites are the Bucks to repeat as champions or the Lakers to win again,”  he said.

The Milwaukee Bucks, who won the championship last season, were given the third-best odds by the NBA’s official website at a 10% of repeating as champions. However, Martinez does see the Nets as favorites if Kyrie Irving returns to the team.

“If the Nets get Kyrie to play they are clear favorites,” Martinez said. “Kyrie contributes a lot and is a key piece for their success”.

With the NBA returning, fans are now being welcomed back to games. Cities such as New York and San Francisco require proof of vaccination to enter arenas. Martinez sees himself possibly attending a game this season.

“The only games I might attend are Nets games because they’re the closest,” said Martinez. “I’m definitely not opposed to going to one”.

Like Martinez, Garlatti also sees himself attending games this season.

“Maybe, I feel like I could attend a game,” Garlatti said.

The NBA season starts off with a doubleheader of games, on October 19th as the reigning champions Milwaukee Bucks will take on the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers will take on the Golden State Warriors.
