Kean TV hosted a screening of the 2016 Academy Award-winning film, “Moonlight,” on Feb. 16 in celebration of Black History Month.

Doors opened at 7:30 p.m., and drinks and snacks were provided before the start of film 8. Before the screening, music was played, and students were able to converse with one another.

The idea for the event came from Junior Communications member Matthew Girello. Girello, a movie fanatic who hosts a television show “Movies with Matt on Kean TV., stated that he wanted to celebrate black stories told by black creators.

A  group of students came to watch the screening. For most of them, it was their first time seeing Moonlight. “

One student in attendance was junior communication, major Diegio Mendoza. Communications major junior Diego Mendoza was one of the students who attended the screening.

“The movie was fantastic,” Mendoza said. “Nothing brings people closer together than watching movies.”

After the screening, many other students followed Mendoza’s sentiment. They also enjoyed the film of enjoying the film. Senior communications major and president of Kean TV, Maria Irvin, noted that watching black movies by black creators is essential for anyone who enjoys films.

“Representation in storytelling matters,” Irvin said. “We at KeanTV are proud to facilitate black stories in the medium of film”
