Kean Women’s softball looks to repeat excellence and reach Super Regionals

Coming off an NCAA Tournament Regional Final appearance, the Kean Women’s softball team looks to continue their success this season.
“I’m looking to continue where we left off from last year,” said head coach Margie Acker. “We lost in the regional at home and obviously we would like to win the conference. We would like to go to the Regional Tournament again and the Super Regionals.”
This season, the team will be without key contributors who helped lead the team to 39 wins last year.
“One of our starting pitchers and one of our better bats in the lineup graduated and our starting outfielder Olivia Zengel also graduated so we are still figuring out who we are going to put out there,” said Acker. “We’ve focused on the little things in the off-season so that’s what we’re going to continue to do.”
Players revealed what they worked on in the off-season to improve, including lifting four times a week with Kean’s strength and conditioning coach.
“During the winter break I went to my CrossFit gym at homeboy order to stay in shape for the season,” said junior outfielder Maria Bonfanti. “We also hit and throw on our own or with teammates in Harwood Arena or outside if the weather permits.”
Despite the team coming off of a great season, there are still a few things that Acker would like to see to further benefit the team in her 21st season with Kean.
“I think we need to figure out what works best together,” she said. “We have a young pitching staff and are anchored by a three-year starter, so we need everyone in the bullpen on the same page.”
Some players are looking to improve themselves as players in order to help the team win as many games as possible. This includes working to become a better teammate both on and off the field.
“I am looking to improve my hitting, mentality at the plate, and being the absolute best teammate I can be,” said sophomore infielder Sarah Zengel.
A particular aspect of this team is how they manage to be great teammates to one another and perform with excellence in the field.
“My teammates are my best friends and there is never a dull moment,” said Bonfanti. “We are always together and having fun.”
Both the players and coaches have their expectations set for this season. Zengel received NJAC Rookie of the Week last season and posted a .278 batting average with 21 RBI in 44 games. However, she wants to put up even better numbers in 2020.
“My expectations for this season are for us to work harder than last year,” Zengel said. “Learn more and push each other every day to be the strongest and best team we can be.”
Kean will open the season at home against FDU-Florham on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 11 a.m.
