The Masters (MA) in Writing Studies Program and Kean University Writing Project are hosting a Spring Symposium to celebrate the work and achievements of graduating students.
The symposium, taking place May 2 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the Green Lane Academic Building, is an event held every semester in which a student graduates from the writing studies program and obtains their Master’s degree.
According to Mia Zamora, Ph.D., the director of both the MA in Writing Studies Program and the Kean University Writing Project, the symposiums are meant to serve as celebrations of the efforts of program veterans whose time at Kean is coming to a close.
“It is a special time for family and friends to gather and hear about the research and scholarship that has been completed by the graduating students,” Zamora said. “There is so much remarkable work being done by our Kean MA students in the area of writing studies and I feel it is important to showcase and acknowledge the significance of their work.”
The graduating students will be allowed to present their work to other attendees. Additionally, anyone present will be able to well network and receive information on additional learning opportunities.
“Visitors will be able to hear about the final thesis projects of the graduating MA students in the MA in Writing Studies program, meet faculty, meet students who are currently in the program, meet incoming MA students and hear about our special courses, grant-sponsored opportunities and outreach programming and partnerships,” Zamora said.
While this event is geared towards those in the MA in Writing Studies Program, the symposium is open to anyone looking to attend regardless of their major. Zamora stressed that attendance of this event could benefit anyone considering furthering their education in this program, or people intrigued by the work done in this niche of Kean.
“Our work has global reach due to our digital networks online and we have published in global learning forums, open journals, open learning networks and open online resources. The symposium is a time to also share our work more locally as we spread the news about upcoming programming and grants, welcome new members into our community and connect in person,” Zamora said.
