Major seats remain vacant after Student Government election

Over 1,400 students took to CougarLink on April 5 and 6 to elect officers for the full-time undergraduate Student Organization and the Graduate and Part-Time Student Council (GPSC), but several positions remain vacant since there were no candidates.

Emily Cubilete was voted in as the full-time undergraduate president, while Lawrence Owens was elected GPSC president. Besides class representatives, the remaining seats for the GPSC were not filled.

Data from Student Government’s CougarLink page shows that 1,437 students voted, or 9 percent out of a total graduate and undergraduate population of 15,406, according to fall 2015 institutional research from the university.

Many of the more than 40 available positions were filled, however, some were not since there were no applicants, said Student Organization’s Managing Assistant Director Carli Hench.

All positions for the Senior Class Executive Board are still available, as well as the Sophomore and Junior Class Vice President, Secretary, and Representatives. As for the Graduate and Part-time Council, the positions for Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary are still open.

Both governments provide representation for part-time, full-time, undergraduate and graduate Kean students. Officers are elected annually and have the opportunity to work with administrative committees, organize programs, activities and work with funded groups on campus.

If interested in applying for a Council Representative position, students can fill out a council representative application. For the Executive Board and Class Executive Board positions, interested students must complete only the Student Organization or GPSC Vacancy applications.
