Malachi Jeffers-Viera did not take long to make his presence felt in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Kean University freshman forward has emerged as one of the Cougars’ most consistent contributors during the 2025-26 season, earning multiple NJAC Rookie of the Week honors and positioning himself as a leading candidate for NJAC Rookie of the Year. Jeffers-Viera, a 6-foot-5 forward from Plainsboro and a graduate of West Windsor-Plainsboro North, has stepped into a major role as a first-year player, delivering double-figure scoring performances while contributing across the stat sheet in rebounds, assists and steals.

“At first, coming in, I didn’t really expect to impact the game with my scoring,” Jeffers-Viera said. “I was ready to play defense, rebound, and get my teammates’ shots. But as we got further in the year, the team needed scoring, and the coaches let me know that they had confidence in me.”
Injuries and team needs quickly pushed him into a larger offensive role, and he said the coaches encouraged him to be more aggressive. Over time, he found a balance between scoring and creating opportunities for teammates.
“Now, after we dealt with some injuries, we had two starters out, and that’s when it clicked that there isn’t a choice to be aggressive if we want to win games,” he said.
His breakout stretch in January solidified his standing among the conference’s top freshmen. On Jan. 12, he earned NJAC Rookie of the Week after averaging 15 points and five rebounds in a 2-0 week for Kean. Two weeks later, he won the honor again after averaging 26 points per game across two contests, including a 31-point performance against Stockton and another 20-plus point outing. Jeffers-Viera said those games showed him that attacking the basket could open opportunities for both himself and his teammates, and that he was starting to adjust to the faster pace of college basketball.
He has emphasized contributing in multiple ways beyond scoring, including rebounding, defending top opponents and keeping teammates engaged.
“There are going to be nights when I’m struggling to score, so how else do I help my team win?” he said.

His versatility forces opponents to adjust and allows Kean to maintain balance even in tough matchups. Senior Phil Brown Jr. has noticed Jeffers-Viera’s poise and maturity.
“He never really gets too high or too low. He’s always calm, cool, collected. That’s just who he is,” Brown said, “he carries himself as if he was any junior or senior and like he’s been here before…a lot of freshmen aren’t playing nearly 40 minutes a game and putting up the numbers he’s been putting up and having the confidence to do so, let’s be real.”
Even with multiple weekly honors, Jeffers-Viera said team success remains his priority. He noted that some of his biggest scoring performances came during losses, and that personal accolades mean little compared with winning. He says that, “if the team wins, (he’s happy).” His focus on helping the team succeed over personal recognition has become a hallmark of his freshman season.
As the regular season nears its conclusion, Jeffers-Viera has established himself as one of the NJAC’s most complete and reliable freshmen. His scoring, versatility and poise in high-pressure moments have consistently elevated the Cougars, and his ability to impact the game in multiple ways sets him apart from other first-year players in the conference. If NJAC Rookie of the Year honors are awarded to the freshman who combines production, influence and growth throughout the season, Jeffers-Viera has firmly made his case.
