The upstart Kean men’s lacrosse team made its way to the Skyline Conference championship Saturday against Montclair State. The problem was that the Cougars caught Montclair State on a bad day as Red Hawks senior Kenneth Bogert scored six goals to lift the Red Hawks over the Cougars 16-7.
Bogert was named Skyline Conference Tournament MVP with his performance with goalkeeper Michael Dorn helping out with 10 saves.
The Cougars kept it close in the first quarter after a couple of trade-off goals among Bogert, Richard Cheifitz and Brad Mills. Kean was down 5-3 at the end of one and that is when the Red Hawks started to take control of the game. Montclair State added seven goals in the second and held Kean to only two goals.
Kean was outscored 4-2 in the second half, which put the exclamation point on the win for Montclair.
Mills and John Marcelli led the Cougars with two goals. Tom Clifford and Sean Bobal added one each as well.
Now is hold your breath time for the Cougars. Kean is 15-3 this season, which could be a good enough record to get into the tournament. Two of the teams losses come against Montclair State, who beat the Cougars 10-6 during the regular season. The other loss comes against Adrien College, who the Cougars played in a snowy match back in late February.
The team was 10-0 at home and only had the one loss in non-conference play. A major improvement over last year’s 8-7 record.
The team’s postseason fate will be decided Sunday May 5 when the NCAA Tournament field is announced.
