The School of Communication, Media and Journalism, also known as the School of CMJ, hosted its annual Spring panel discussion.
On the March 23rd, 2021 edition of the panel, CMJ based the discussion around the theme of retaining your job position after being hired, advancing your career and being hired fresh out of college in the first place.
“Be curious, never say no when somebody is giving you a new task, wanting to try something new,” Stokes said. “I think people like that have that curiosity they’re very well read and up to date on current events. I think those are people who do exceptionally well at my firm.”
Christina Stokes is the Managing Producer of NJ Advance Media, a local news station for NJ that delivers all news about daily occurrences, entertainment and sports.
Curiosity, tenacity and attentiveness would be prime traits for college students whose major is Communications to have, something Pavkovic would attest to as a journalist herself.
“We’re journalists, and so we have to be interested and curious about the world around us, when we interview people, we need people who are aware of what’s going on, not only in New Jersey but around the world.” Pavkovic said.
Even those who may not be so confrontational and extroverted can find success in their careers.
“I understand not everybody is an extrovert like me, some people just work differently, they prefer to think about something before coming to the table with an answer, which is fine.” Stokes said.
“Editors are more behind the scenes; editors are the ones in the back of the room doing the intake getting stories, photos, everything ready for publication” Pavkovic said.
Students can be expected to find just about any position that best suits their skills and personality, with the key takeaway being that being skilled with talking to people, healthy persistence and thoughtfulness will go a long way with keeping one’s job position, let alone finding one in the first place.
