PHOTOS: Kean kicks off Black History Month with flag raising

Students and faculty attended the annual start of Black History Month on campus today with speakers, live music, art and food in the Center for Academic Success building.
Director of the Office of Africana Studies Dr. James Conyers led the raising of the Pan-African flag outside the Miron Student Center as dozens of students looked on.

Performances included the Kean Gospel Choir and the Alex Desrivieres Trio.
Shadiya Bolling, a freshman communication major, said she was looking forward to the upcoming events lined up on campus that recognize the historical month, including “Black Love: The Royal Roots” in the STEM building on Feb. 15.
“A lot of colleges are not doing this,” she said of Kean’s emphasis on Black History Month. “I really respected it […] I’m glad I went. When we were going around to other tables I got information about different clubs and different events going on.”
Food was also served at the “Wandering Spirits: African Wax Prints” art gallery in the CAS building. The gallery will be on display through March 3.
