Kean University announced its new commencement speakers for this year’s graduation after pulling Academy-Award-winning rapper Common amid complaints from New Jersey State Police over a song the rapper wrote about Assata Shakur, who was convicted of killing one of their own in 1973.
Playwright, actress and professor Anna Deavere Smith, who starred in series like West Wing and Nurse Jackie, will deliver Kean University’s 2015 undergraduate commencement address.
Judy Smith, the inspiration for the television show “Scandal” whose crisis management firm advised people like Monica Lewinsky and NFL quarterback Michael Vick, will be the graduate commencement speaker.
