Kean University encountered a power outage on Monday, Jan. 23 around 6:30 p.m. leaving students and faculty in suspense. During the nor’easter storm, power outages took over Salem Road, Green Lane and adjacent streets around the University.

The North Avenue building was the only building with power. The outage created confusion for some students after University Relations and campus police sent out an email before the outage stating all evening classes and events will be held.

“I have class in half an hour at 7:30,” said Jeremiah Gamo, sophomore, forensic technology major. “I hope classes cancel, hopefully.”

With that in mind, some classes proceeded despite the power outage. Students were seen using the lights from their cell phones to read during class.

“I think it’s really strange, the rain doesn’t seem to be that bad,” said Abidemi Olaoye, senior, information technology major. “I’m kind of wondering why the power went out and there is no back-up generator.”

At 6:58 p.m., University Relations issued a second email cancelling classes. Police directed traffic as students and faculty left the campus. Kean then issued a notice that power was restored at 9:51 p.m. According to an email sent out by university relations, the storm and winds knocked out power on Kean Union campus.
