If you thought that the baseball team reaped the New Jersey Athletic Conference awards Wednesday, you should know that the softball team did not do so bad either as the conference announced its award recipients Thursday prior to the Cougars’ game against William Paterson.
Five Cougars were named to an all-conference team and four of the five made the first team tying Rowan for most in the league.
Senior second baseman Katie Schuh, junior outfielders Sandra Binkiewicz and Meghan Cegielski and sophomore pitcher Courtney Yard were all named to the first team all-conference. Junior shortstop Kelly Moorehead was named to the second team all-conference.
Schuh completes her career with an all-conference selection, her first, leading the team in on-base percentage (.416) and runs scored (39). She is batting .302 with two home runs this season.
Binkiewicz is part of the heart of the Cougars’ order. She is batting .315 with a team-leading 34 RBI. This is her first all-conference selection.
Cegielski also gets her first all-conference nomination but mainly for her defense. She has yet to commit an error this season in 51 chances. She leads the team in batting average with a mean .384 and has 28 runs scored and 10 RBI to her total.
Sophomore fire ball pitcher Yard caps off the first team selections. Also her first, she broke the record for most strikeouts all-time by a Cougars player this season. Yard also set a single-game record with 15 strikeouts.
Moorehead rounds out the list of recipients. The cleanup hitter for the Cougars is batting .331 with 28 RBI this season.
The Cougars look to stave off elimination Thursday afternoon against William Paterson.
