Making it to the finals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference must have left a big impression on the NCAA Selection Committee because the Kean University softball team received an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Softball Tournament.

The Cougars will play in the Montclair Regional and will take on DeSales University in the first round of the tournament Thursday at 1 P.M. at Montclair State University.

Luckily for Kean, the softball team has already seen DeSales this year. The Cougars swept the Bulldogs in a double header 7-1, 14-5 on the Bulldogs’ home field. Courtney Yard and Casey Glatts both got win in those games and the offense was impeccable.

DeSales is 28-10-1 this season and coming off a Middle Atlantic Conference tournament championship this past weekend when they defeated FDU-Florham 8-0.

Kean is joined in the region by No. 3 Montclair State, No. 16 Virginia Wesleyan, College of Staten Island, Roger Williams, Farmingdale State and Susquehanna.

This is just the fourth time in the program’s 40-year history that they have reached the NCAA Tournament and the third time in the last four years. In 2010, the Cougars came within one victory to reach the NCAA College Softball World Series. It is not going to be an easy road for the Cougars, but having already shocked teams in the conference tournament, the Cougars are poised to do it again.
