Softball team goes 9-1 on spring break trip to Florida

Kean University’s softball team spent their spring break in Kissimmee, Florida and their plays on the field were hotter than the weather there.

The team spent 10 days in Florida where they went 9-1 during the rebel spring games. While their main focus was playing softball, they did have some down time. They got to spend time with their families and even spent a day at Universal Studios.

Head coach Margie Acker believes that her team started off their season with a strong attitude and had consistency and they played in Florida with a positive attitude.

“Our team’s attitude going into Florida was very positive,” said Acker. “We were able to remain consistent both offensively and defensively throughout our spring trip which helped us to be successful.”

The Cougars started off the season strong and now have an overall season average of 11-1. In 12 games, Kean is outscoring their opponents 73-12 and they have compiled seven shutouts.

Their early success has a lot to do with the performance of their pitchers Shannon McMahon and Taryn DiGiacomo. McMahon has posted a 6-0 record while keeping her era at 0.72. DiGiacomo has a 5-1 record as well as a 0.74 ERA.

Additionally, on the offensive end, the Cougars have six players batting over .300 and four players batting over .400. The standout has been senior and four-year starter Emily Sabo who is hitting .548 to start the season.

Acker is going to make sure that her team does not lose focus and remains motivated throughout the rest of the season.

“We have a long season ahead of us with many games left to play,” said Acker. “We need to continue to get better every day and stay focused and positive.”
