The Tower visits Yale Daily News to discuss diversity in journalism (VIDEO)

The Tower — and about 13 other student-run newspapers — attended the Yale Daily News (YDN) Annual Conference on College Newspapers in late January to discuss diversity in journalism.
Students from universities including Brown, the University of Connecticut and Wesleyan visited the New Haven, Conn. campus on Jan. 27 for the two-day event. Students shared how their publications have become more inclusive of all groups on campus and how they reported on topics including race, gender and politics.
Speakers at the second day of the conference were former New York Times Supreme Court correspondent Linda Greenhouse, Max Abelson of Bloomberg News, PIX11 reporter James Ford, and former New York Times religion columnist Mark Oppenheimer.
Reporters at YDN are not paid. The Yale Daily News Foundation Stipend Program was recently created to ensure that financially-struggling students could have the opportunity to work at the paper. YDN also invited minority groups on campus to its headquarters for input about the newspaper’s coverage.
The Tower’s staff consists of mostly journalism majors, who are required to take three semesters of the practicum and are not paid. Staff has consistently represented different races, religions, sexual orientations and socioeconomic backgrounds, which reflects the diversity of Kean University’s large minority student body.
The Tower invites all groups on campus to submit story ideas using our online tip form, and encourages readers to send letters to the editor and guest op-eds.
