Softball Edged By Rowan

The Kean University softball team knew that going into the New Jersey Athletic Conference, they would have a tough, uphill task of conquering some of the top teams in the conference. The first task was to take on the No. 1 seed Rowan Profs. A task that was extremely difficult to complete.

The Cougars scored first in the top of third inning when Profs shortstop Shilah Snead committed an error that allowed catcher Jill Martin to score. However, that would be the only run the Cougars would push across the plate as Kean dropped the first round game 3-1.

Meagan Lee hit a two-run home run off of Cougars’ starter Courtney Yard in the fourth and then in the fifth, Jess Phillips drove home Shannon Costello to put the icing on top of the cake for the Profs.

Yard went the distance allowing the three runs on four hits and striking out four batters. Yard is now 15-12 on the season.

The Profs got a bit of a scare when Katie Schuh was up in the top of the fifth. Schuh drilled a pitch down the left field line nearing the fence but it curved foul. It was the closest Kean got to tying the game off of Profs pitcher LeAnne Miller.

With one loss in the tournament, Kean cannot afford another one or they will be eliminated. The Cougars take on William Paterson Friday at Rowan. William Paterson is coming off a loss against Montclair State 4-2.

The Cougars split the double header against the Pioneers back on April 16.
