Teaching Students To Take Control Behind The Wheel

Texting has changed the lives of people all around the country, people text all day and sadly some people even text while driving; that is why one Kean University sorority has implemented a campaign teaching students the dangers of texting and driving.
Omega Phi Chi Multicultural Sorority Incorporated will be holding their “iFocus Campaign” in the Miron Student Center (MSC) atrium on Wednesday, Nov. 11. They have hosted this event in the years past. This will be a tabling event that will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Students will be able to take the pledge to not text and drive. They will also be able to write down what they focus on. Writing down what they focus on will help set a reality for students to realize what they risk losing when they text while driving.
“Our main focus for the “iFocus Campaign” is to promote people to stop texting and driving and to promote the safety of driving,” said Tatiana Amador, a Biology pre physical therapy track major with a minor in psychology and sister of Omega Phi Chi Multicultural Sorority Incorporated, “A great amount of people get killed from these accidents because the driver is not focused on the road.”
Texting and driving is an ongoing problem in the United States. It is reported that texting while driving causes 1,600,000 accidents per year and 330,000 injuries per year. Texting while driving makes people 23 times more likely to cause a crash. Texting while driving is equivalent to driving five seconds blind.
“We chose this [iFocus Campaign] because it’s something that can affect us all or we know someone that has been a part of something like this,” said Amador “We would hope to accomplish the fact that people understand the precautions of texting and driving.”
The sisters of Omega Phi Chi Multicultural Sorority Incorporated are asking students to join them by taking the pledge to not text while driving. They look forward to seeing everyone in the MSC atrium this Wednesday.
