Kean University’s Chemistry Club is more than just a group of students interested in formulas and lab work; it is a friendly environment that fosters curiosity, teamwork, and practical exploration. The group, which meets every other Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the ACS room in George Hennings Hall C243, unites students of various experience levels who are passionate about chemistry. Regardless of whether members are majoring in chemistry or are just interested in science, the group offers a laid-back, encouraging, and stimulating atmosphere.

Samantha Falcone has been actively involved in shaping the community as a Chemistry–Forensics major with a biology minor. Her connection to the club is both academic and personal, as she was inspired to join after taking General Chemistry I with Dr. Ree in fall 2024. What started out as a close relationship between students and professors eventually developed into something more: a common goal of revitalizing and bolstering the campus Chemistry Club.

“I joined the chemistry club because I am a huge chemistry person,” Falcone said. “Dr. Ree was my General Chemistry 1 lab professor in fall 2024. My friend and I had a good relationship with him, and eventually he wanted to start back up the chem club. I was completely on board and have been so excited about the club ever since.”

The club’s environment is influenced by Dr. Ree, who oversees the organization. Meetings frequently strike a mix between education and leisure, allowing students to interact with science in ways that are approachable rather than intimidating. While some meetings are organized around activities and demonstrations, others are more relaxed and let students study, chat, or just relax with classmates who have similar academic interests.

In one particularly remarkable presentation, Dr. Ree used liquid nitrogen to freeze a variety of objects, providing students with a striking and unforgettable look at how temperature affects matter. On other days, participants might watch science-related television or utilize the time to concentrate on homework in a communal setting.

Additionally, the group is notable for its readiness to work with other student organizations. In the past, the Chemistry Club and the Dungeons & Dragons Club collaborated to develop a science-themed game experience that unexpectedly combined creativity and scientific reasoning. These partnerships demonstrate how chemistry can relate to a variety of interests outside of the lab and help the club reach a wider audience.

One of Falcone’s favorite memories from the club reflects both leadership and community engagement. She recalls being elected as PR manager, a role that allowed her to combine her interest in social media with her passion for the club.

“I love social media, and I am so honored to have the privilege of running a social media account,” she said. She also highlighted the success of a club bake sale, which brought students together and helped strengthen the organization’s visibility on campus.

The club’s overarching goal of making chemistry feel approachable, enjoyable, and community-driven is reflected in events like these. Beyond the classroom, the Chemistry Club helps students make friends, gain self-assurance in their scientific skills, and investigate possibilities for future involvement, such as field trips and fundraisers.

In the end, the Chemistry Club is a place where science transcends its status as a classroom subject. It develops into a shared experience based on inquiry, collaboration, and learning. The group continues to develop as a community where students may interact, learn, and enjoy chemistry in action through laid-back meetings, thrilling demonstrations, and meaningful cooperation.
