ANNOUNCEMENT- The College of Liberal Arts is hosting the first CLA Convocation Tuesday September 18 in Wilkins Theatre from 2 to 4 p.m.

The event is for students who major in Communications, Sociology, Psychology, English, History and Asian Studies to come together and be exposed to the different programs the college offers. A convocation is a formal ceremony that CLA is using to welcome students to provide information and school spirit.

Students will meet Acting Dean Jonathan Mercantini, learn about internships and hear from MacArthur Genius Award recipient, Terrance Hayes.

According to Mercantini, the convocation gives freshmen and transfer students the “opportunity to talk to other students that are juniors and seniors in the same major that can provide them with some advice and insight into what they’ve learned.”

Students and faculty can network while enjoying free ice cream provided by the college.

“[It is] a way for students to get to know faculty earlier and to feel more comfortable coming in for office hours and advising,” said Mercantini.

Mercantini developed this idea with Dr. Karin Beck, former associate dean and executive director of the School of General Studies.

This event is required for all freshmen, transfer students and full-time faculty in the College of Liberal Arts.

Classes held by the college will also be cancelled during the time of the event to give students the opportunity to attend.

Mercantini hopes “students will get excited about the upcoming academic year and being Kean students, as well as the possibilities that come from getting a college education.”
