Studies show that around this time of year it is known for many people to be affected by seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D.). This disorder also goes by Major Depressive Disorder with Seasonal Patterns.

There is an anonymous online questionnaire offered for free for students to find out whether or not they should seek help, which can be found on the main page of the counseling center website in the sidebar of kean.edu.

“In Feb., 84 students took the free mental health screening,” said Vincent Kiefner, Director of Health Services at Kean University. “The free questionnaire will give you info on what to do next and what you are dealing with.”

Students can schedule an appointment by either going to the health services office, or by calling the front desk using the main phone number listed in the directory.

If the situation seems to be dangerous, students can tell the front desk that it is an emergency and they will be set up to speak with someone in a timely manner.

Health services has also launched a new program called Counseling Liaison. A counselor is assigned to one to two residence halls, which serve as a person for contact for administrators. According to residents, they feel there is a strengthened bond between the two buildings because of this program.

“I think it’s a great idea that they are doing the counseling liaison program,” said Roman Bellanger, a junior at Kean University. “It makes me feel more safe knowing that the RHDs are in touch with Health Services.”
