Kean Students Christmas at a Distance

It is that time of the year again when the streets get covered in white and the temperatures dramatically drop. House porches are decorated with colorful lights and air balloons of all shapes and sizes. The smell of pine cones is in the air and the colors red and green are the trend again. Christmas is here.

Like every other celebration that has taken place this year, Christmas will have to take a turn as well due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Families will have to make special accommodations and arrangements for this year’s celebrations.

“I will be spending Christmas at home with my family,” said Naraly Vasquez, senior at Kean University.

Vasquez states that Christmas is her family’s most important celebration of the year and that this year they will video chat with the rest of her family in order to keep everyone safe. She explains that it would be rude to invite some members and not the rest, therefore they all have decided to each spend Christmas in their own home and have postponed the gatherings for next year.

“I have a big family so it is impossible to fit them all in one house and still follow safe protocols,” said Vasquez.

Gift giving has also taken a twist this year. All types of new gifts have emerged with the pandemic such as colorful masks to match all outfits as well as hand sanitizers of all sizes and scents to match lotions.

“I will be giving everyone a nice mask with their name along with their gift this year,” said Janice Rodas, senior Business major at Kean University.

Rodas states that she will be spending the holidays at home with her loved ones and that she will be mailing gifts out to those who are at a distance. Mailing gifts this year has become more convenient than ever as well as the default option for those who want to show their loved ones their appreciation from a distance.

“I just want to spend Christmas being safe this year and being thankful for my family and friends,” said Rodas.
