Something Smells Fishy

“Cabin Fever” has given way to “Hay Fever” as spring claims the soggy ground the melting winter snow has left behind. The flowers are blooming, the trees are budding, but something smells fishy.
Beginning March 5th, 250,000 trout have been stocked in predetermined waterways for the annual opening day of trout season in New Jersey. Subsequent stockings continue for several weeks depending on the water body.
Union County abounds with numerous stocked waters. These include the Rahway River and Greenbrook rivers and various lakes and ponds. Warinanco Park in Roselle is the closest stocked location to Kean University; only about a ten minute drive near Route 27 (St. George’s Ave).
Michael Costa, a student at Kean University, is an avid year-round fisherman who is no stranger to hunting this bountiful yet challenging prey in Union County.
“I go to Seeley’s Pond, the Rahway River, Echo Lake, Nomahegan Park,” said Costa.
His favorite spot in Union County is Seeley’s Pond in Watchung where he caught a small brown trout.
“I like to use Powerbait or Martin Panther spinners,” said Costa.
With the rivers and waterways of Union County swollen with possibilities, it is time to get up and get down with the trout fishing experience around Kean.
