This week Thursday, October 14th marks the start of breast cancer awareness month at Kean University.

Located at MSC 228 at 11:00 am on this day every year, the school joins the rest of the world in a month-long campaign to raise awareness about the effect of breast cancer.

In a statement for Kean News, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Xu Shuli expressed the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness week at campus.

“I am honored to be part of those recognizing this day,” said Dr. Xu Shuli. “There will be no classes tomorrow and the day after, but the event will continue amidst normal academic activities”.

The school event has usually invited professionals that offer free breast cancer screening to camp in the school for the month, offering them free accommodation. This event might not receive the turnout we have received in the past years because of this COVID-19. But we hope it goes well.”

Certainly, there are many students excited about this event and its benefits. However, some others find the importance of the week for other reasons. As it is for female senior student, Joan, whose major is linguistics.

“That means two days without lectures, and what could be better than a weekend starting two days early?”.

CDC statistics state that colon cancer is the second-highest cause of cancer-related mortality among Americans. Also, that Colon cancer was diagnosed in over 135,000 people in the United States in 2017.

More individuals will have access to screening because they are aware of their screening choices, which means fewer will die from the illness.

A greater understanding of cancer may lead to better lifestyle choices as a result of increased awareness.
