In my opinion, language learning, the most niche hobby in the world, is by far the hardest task anyone can do. I add emphasis on “anyone” because it’s common for people to believe you need to have a wide range of talents and an IQ of over 130 if you speak multiple languages.

However, the truth is that it doesn’t require raw talent to learn several languages, rather dedication and hard work. Hence, why everyone can learn the very basics of any language no matter how difficult it is. But why? Why should we dedicate our time to learning languages?
The common reasons why people learn languages are to enhance their travelling experiences, connect with people of different backgrounds, for family/heritage and culture reasons, but most importantly, a boost in career opportunities.
Have you ever wondered why effective communication is the most important skill in the workforce? Because it allows for versatility and productivity. Without productive conversation and communication skills, it leads to a lack of social skills and a disconnect between your peers. So, when your ability to communicate is adequate, knowing at least one language besides your mother tongue can and will open new doors for you.
Now that I’ve explained the benefits of learning languages, I want you to reflect, as a Kean student, why you should dedicate yourself to this hobby.
It is a commonly known fact that we, the student body, are one of the topmost diverse universities in the state of New Jersey. Here at Kean, there are limited language courses you can take to build a foundation and basic understanding of a language. However, to make the best out of these courses, it is important that you build an environment for yourself outside of the classroom.

Language learning is a process that requires immersion if you seek fast results. Let’s take the Wenzhou Kean campus in China as an example. Despite the fact that it’s an English-speaking campus, you can make the most out of your experience there if you can hold a proficient conversation in Mandarin. Both job and friendship opportunities can open up.
Although, it’s important to keep in mind that you don’t have to be perfect. Language is the ability to understand and produce messages. With that being said, it’s important to remember the significance of seeking to understand and seeking to be understood.
If you decide to start learning a language, you shouldn’t overload your brain and not expect to make mistakes. You will make tons of mistakes, and you must embrace that.
Language learning is time-consuming, which is why you need to build a foundation accordingly and do everything little by little. Do not rush yourself.
For the most part, take advantage of the diversity here at Kean to connect with people from other countries (such as our schoolmates from WKU). You’ll be surprised by all the possible opportunities and connections you can make if you speak someone’s mother tongue.
To close out, I want to end this with a quote from Nelson Mandela about languages.
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, then it goes to his head,” Mandela said. “If you talk to him in his own language, then it goes to his heart.”
